I will start off by saying I haven’t been here since November of last year. Every now and then I wonder if there is anything new going on here at osscast. Spirituality, seems like maybe the most interesting discussion topic in the world after sex. And yet there is a surprising silence on this website. I am curious as to why? Why don’t people clamor for a place around this virtual table to talk about the notion of spirit?
I just noticed that I was about to write, “talk about the afterlife” but then I thought, not everyone embraces the notion of an afterlife as the stuff of spirituality. So I made my statement more general. Is there trepidation around offending others who may not believe what you do? There is for me. Maybe that explains the quiet.
Or maybe it is because open source spirituality by its very nature is open to interpretation. You can say anything you want, and not be right and not be wrong. What is there to discuss really?
Osscast member one says, “You know, I believe that when we die we are sent to gather around a great Bran Muffin in a glorious donut shop in the sky. The Bran Muffin is the creator and keeps the true believers regular.”
Osscast member two responds, “Ok.”
And that really is that. That is all the discussion there is to have around that particular belief. I suppose Osscast member two could rebut with a statement, “I am a Bran atheist.”
Osscast member one might then respond, “ok”.
Maybe there really is nothing to talk about because there is nothing to “push” against? I don’t know. I would be interested to hear what others think. To see if we couldn’t generate some lively conversation.
And may the Great Bran Muffin be with you.

Open·Source·Spirituality n. The use of Open Source methodologies in the creation of spiritual belief systems. Followers see themselves as part of a more generalized open source movement, which does not limit itself to software, but applies the same principles in the creation of open source culture.

OSSCastMissionStatement We are the way we experience our God- through one another. We become the trailblazers of our reality and what we find will surprise us by confirming our vastness again and again. Perhaps, in being reminded of this, you will acknowledge in yourself your ability to be the creator and the created of your reality, to choose what you want to happen and then be surprised by the way it unfolds.

Well bwhite,
What I had envisioned for OSScast at the start was a place where people of all faiths and none, could come to be exposed to a ‘core toolbox’ if you will, of basic skills. Like Meditation, Visualization, Breathwork, Fasting, Chanting, etc….and MORE importantly, talk to the people that DO those things as part of their own personal disciplines. Then maybe with enough input from the toolbox, these hypothetical osscast members, would at least be able to come away with more than what they started with. They would be able to take their personal path that much further without having to sign up for the WHOLE dogma that lots of other sources out there require.
I felt, and STILL feel, that given the right environment we can come together as a people and combine the very BEST that we have from all of our disciplines.
I don’t believe that conflict (healthy or not) needs to occur for development to take place, but I fear the deeper truth of your words. That without an inherent conflict to any sort of exchange, 21st century people become bored and quickly move on.
I guess only time will really tell…….and I hope I see more activity here, from me as well as everyone else.
Warmly,
Russ
